Bolivia, the “Jewel of the Andes” is a medium-sized country located in the heart of South America, surrounded by Peru, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. Bolivia is one of only two landlocked countries in South America and was once part of the Inca empire. Even though the nation was later ruled by Spain, today much of the population retains old Indian styles of clothing, music, festivals and language. Bolivia offers incredible cultural diversity, being home to more than 30 different ethnic groups who strongly resist cultural change.

Family life
Family life is the backbone of Bolivian society. Most families consist of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Supervising the children and managing the household are normally the responsibilities of the wife, although it may be common for your host family to have one or more maids. The husband is likely to be occupied with work outside the home.

Community Service in Bolivia
Bolivia offers a range of community service projects, including agricultural or environmental work, human rights, preserving Bolivia’s cultural heritage, writing reports on political developments for organisations investigating international relations, children’s education, women’s development, working with handicapped children, working in lower socio-economic kindergartens and church-based community projects.

A basic knowledge of Spanish is required for AFS Community Service participants to Bolivia. Vegetarians are hard to place but there may be exceptions.

Gutted to leave

“I was gutted to leave the children and gutted to leave the women as well. I loved it. I totally recommend it. I may be the same on the outside, but I’m very different on the inside. It’s very humbling.

I never got called gringo even once. I even called the tourists ‘turistas’ like everyone else. I can’t wait to go back.”

Sharon Paterson, farmer from Gore, reflects on her Community Service experience to Bolivia in 2005, where she volunteered for a women’s organisation.
