Norway is famous for its breathtaking glaciers and fjords, but this country is not all frozen; there are large forested areas, rich farmland, gentle valleys, and sunny beaches along its coastline. Norwegian architecture is renowned for both its churches (among the oldest wooden buildings on earth) and soaring skyscrapers. An abundance of off-shore oil has enriched Norway’s prosperity and given its cities a cosmopolitan pace and focus. Tranquility, though, still reigns in small towns. Citizens are avid winter sport enthusiasts, with skiing ranking as a national pastime. In the summer, hiking through the forests and mountains is popular. Norwegians themselves are reserved but kind and, perhaps inevitably, masters of winter sports. The country’s voters also have a fierce national pride that led them to reject joining the European Union.

Family life
Husbands and wives typically consider each other equal in authority. Families tend to be small, and everyone shares in the housework. Parents expect to know when their children are going out and where they are going.

School life
All courses of study at upper secondary school require three types of subjects: compulsory core subjects (Norwegian, natural and social science, PE), specialty subjects and electives. School runs from late August to late June. Classes begin at 8am and go to 3pm, Monday to Friday. There are seven 45-minute periods per day with 10- to 15-minute breaks between classes. Each class averages 25-30 students. There are up to one-week holidays in the autumn, in February and at Easter, as well as time off at Christmas.

AFS Norway does not accept smokers or vegetarians.
